Wenger: 'We didn't deserve to lose' - Oh really?

Last updated : 19 March 2003 By Chris Parry
We deserved to lose because careless play - by Cygan and Wiltord - allowed Carew to score twice, and because we failed to create enough chances ourselves. Freddy is clearly not fit - why he played instead of Parlour I do not know.

He also went to great pains to mention that this was the only group game that we lost - but neglected to mention all of the draws that resulted from sloppy play, and left us needing a result tonight.

Here's what he had to say:

"When it was 2-1 there was no game any more because they spoilt the game. They laid down and stayed down and there was no fluency, it was difficult to play football. I would like to check how may minutes the ball was in play from 2-1 onwards."

He added: "We are very disappointed. We were on top of the game in the first half but didn't take advantage of it. Valencia had one shot on goal in the first half and we found ourselves 1-0 down at half-time.

"Maybe we lost the game when we got it back to 1-1 because we dropped too much physically. We didn't create any more chances and Valencia were stronger physically than us - a reversal of the first half.

"When you don't qualify everyone is responsible, the manager, the players and the coaching staff, we are all in the same boat. But we have nothing to be ashamed of tonight - it was an unfortunate loss. We didn't deserve to lose tonight and this was the only game we lost. It is a big disappointment and the players are down. We need to be mentally tough but I have confidence in the strength of my team and we'll do that.

"It is too early to say if changes need to be made. We still have a lot to go for this season and we want to go as far as we can and assess things then. It is early days and we want to finish well in the championship and play in the FA Cup."
