Top Five Underrated Premier League Strikers

Last updated : 12 December 2012 By DSG

When you think of the Premier League's Top Strikers ? the obvious names come to mind. Robin van Persie, Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez, Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney just too name a few. However ? upon reading the Premier League top scorer charts - there's an interesting discovery.

In fact ? out of the top 10 goal scorers this season so far, just three candidates are from a 'top team.' So I decided to have a look at other strikers in the list ? and put together a list of the Top Five Under-Rated Strikers In The Premier League.

1. Steven Fletcher

An obvious candidate. The Sunderland striker has 7 Premier League goals this season and has been the one bright light in Sunderlands dismal campaign so far. The thing with Steven Fletcher is that the Scot has always scored goals. He has scored consistently for weaker sides ? and with the added creativity of Sebastian Larsson, Craig Gardener, Stephane Sessegnon and James McClean ? the former Wolves man is beginning to justify his ?14million price tag.

?14million is a lot of money for a player from the Championship ? but having scored seven league goals already for the club -  Fletcher is beginning to win over the Sunderland fans.

2. Dimitar Berbatov

I must say when I heard that Manchester United had agreed to depart with Dimitar Berbatov it hurt me. The Bulgarian oozes class and is doing very well at Fulham. Now ? I'm in no position to judge the great Sir Alex Ferguson, but selling Berbatov was certainly a massive gain for Fulham ? especially for ?4million!

Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to implement a new style to his Manchester Unites side. Quick, inter-linking, counter-attacking football. Berbatov is not known for his work rate ? and was deemed surplus to requirements at United, after being the leagues top scorer.

The Bulgarian is already the top scorer at Fulham and similar to Fletcher is the one bright light in a rather slow start to Fulham's season. They currently sit 13th in the league, and will look to Berbatov to use all his skill and grace to add some much needed flair to the Fulham attack.

3. Jermaine Defoe

Jermaine Defoe looks a completely different player under Andre Villas-Boas. Given a new lease of life under the Portuguese ? playing in the lone role up top. Defoe has re-payed his manager with 13 goals in all competitions this season.

Emmanuel Adebayor was first choice for Harry Redknapp last season ? and is currently struggling to cement his place in the Tottenham first team.

Tottenham lie fifth in the Premier League joint with Everton. A top four place is their target, and with Defoe's red hot goal-scoring form ? Champions League qualification should be seen as a reasonable feat.

4. Theo Walcott

Im a huge fan of Theo Walcott. I dont believe Theo is under-rated as a player ? but playing in the central striking role, definintly.

Arsene Wenger clearly thinks so too.

Walcott is Arsenal's top scorer this season with 10 goals in all competitions. Thats from 17 apperanaces in which 9 of them were from the bench. The Englishman is desperate to replicate Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and convert from a winger to a front man.

Walcott has proved time and time again this season that he has the ability, skill, speed and finishing ability to play upfront for Arsenal Football Club ? Wenger just needs to play him there.

5. Shane Long

The current leading goal scorer for West Brom this season ? Shane Long has 7 goals in all competitions this season. The Irishman arrived from Reading and has taken the Premier League by storm.

His tireless work rate ensures that all Premier League defenders never have any time to rest ? and with crucial goals this season for Albion, the 25 year old is a key member of Steve Clarke's squad.

He has recently been linked with Liverpool ? which show's how far Shane Long has come since his move to the Premier League.
