Champions League draw - We get Roma

Last updated : 14 November 2002 By Chris Parry
Remember, you can't play a team from the same country, and you can't play a team you played in first group stage, so that narrows it down a little. Here are the pots for the draw:

1). Real Madrid, Manchester United, Barcelona, Valencia
2). Milan, Inter, Juventus, Arsenal
3). Roma, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Deportivo La Coruna
4). Basel, Lokomotiv Moscow, Newcastle United, Ajax

So.......

1). Arsenal are with three other Italian teams in their pot (second seeds).
2). Italians can't play Italians in the next stage, so Arsenal get Roma.
3). Roma were in the same group as Real and can't play each other again. So can't play Real.
4). Man U are in the same pot as Real, so that just leaves Barcelona and Valencia (top seeds).
5). Arsenal can't face any teams in the same pot as Roma, so no Leverkusen, Deportivo or Dortmund (Third seeds)
6). Can't play Newcastle (fourth seeds)
7). The choice of fourth team is Basle, Lokomotiv Moscow & Ajax.

Another complication is that if Arsenal draw Barcelona, they can't get Lokomotiv Moscow and if thet draw Valencia they can't get Basel - Phew!

Therefore, our group will be...

Barcelona, Arsenal, Roma, Basel/Ajax

or...

Valencia, Arsenal, Roma, Lokomotiv Moscow /Ajax
