Arsenal v Sparta Prague - Player Ratings

Last updated : 03 November 2005 By Mike Bohndiek
We knew that we were going to win once Henry had put us in front with a sweet curled effort, and Sparta knew that they had no chance of getting back into the game. The result; a match played at the tempo of a training game.

The first half went by with little incident. Bergkamp hit the bar early on, but once we had scored we lacked any real conviction going forward. This changed at the start of the second half when Pires found himself free on the right numerous times and delivered some good final balls which were well intercepted.

Thankfully Henry wasn't risked for the full ninety, and was replaced by Robin Van Persie, who is rapidly becoming my favourite player at the club. His impact (as like Saturday) was instant, as he turned defenders and set us going forward. He then capped a fine personal display with two very well taken goals. The first a power drive from just outside the area, the second a clinical finish from around the penalty spot.

All in all a goods night work! 12 points from 12 and the first English team to qualify!

Manuel Almunia (6) He made one good save, but his horrendous kicking made sure his poor reputation was maintained.

Gael Clichy (6) An easy game for him, as Sparta posed no threat down their right side.

Sol Campbell (7) Forced Sparta into taking shots from range by pressing them higher up the field.

Kolo Toure (6) He had very little to do all evening.

Lauren (7) He had the freedom of the right wing, and used it to good effect.

Robert Pires (7) Another good performance to add to his display at Spurs. He caused Sparta problems down the right side all night.

Mathieu Flamini (6) Solid in the middle of the park.

Gilberto (6) His passing was much improved from Saturday. Back to one of his standard performances.

Jose Reyes (7) He looked so much more comfortable playing in his natural wide left position. This was a much better display from him and I hope he continues to be used in this role, rather than as an out an out striker which he will never be.

Dennis Bergkamp (6) He could have bagged himself a hat trick in the first 15 minutes! He was unlucky to see one effort come back off the bar.

Thierry Henry (7) One well taken goal, and some dazzling skill to liven up a dull night.

Subs:

Robin Van Persie (7) Off the bench to make another big impact, and get involved quickly. His recent performances surely warrant a first team starting place, and I will be disappointed if he doesn't get that start on Saturday.

Cesc Fabregas (6) Briefly played on the right wing before slotting into the middle.

Emmanuel Eboue (N/A) Only played the last few minutes.
